Japanese Program

Welcome to the Japanese Program at the University of Notre Dame!

We offer a major, supplementary major, and minor in Japanese language and culture.

Students can take advantage of many opportunities for language study, from beginning to advanced Japanese and including language tables, study abroad programs in Nagoya and Tokyo, and support for intensive summer language study abroad. In addition to language classes, the department offers courses in modern and classical Japanese literature, history, and culture including film, anime, and manga.

Outside the classroom, our students participate in a number of cultural events, such as Tea Ceremony, Dressing in Kimono, Movie Night, Karaoke Night, and the annual Asian Film Festival. The student-run Japan Club also organizes many cultural and social activities throughout the year that complement and enrich our academic program.

Arts and Letters students from every major succeed in business, graduate or professional school, or full-time service. Learn more about the career outcomes of all of our graduates, including Japanese majors in our Students and Alumni section.
