Staff at the Beijing Global Gateway (BGG) are creating a special message to help the University of Notre Dame community celebrate the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Tiger.

A special piece of art, featuring a gold tiger, was created by Vivian Zhou, program assistant at the BGG. She says the tiger’s appearance is majestic and carries the mystery of ancient oriental civilization.

“We wish you good health, happiness, and a harmonious relationship with nature, on which our true prosperity depends,” says Zhou.

The Chinese New Year, known in China as the Spring Festival, starts Tuesday, February 1. In Chinese culture, each year in a repeating 12-year cycle is assigned an animal – a sign of inextricable connection, both physical and spiritual.

Zhou enjoys using the Chinese ink style technique, but also paints with watercolor and colored pencil. Her art is inspired by her travels and encounters with local people and places.
