Biography

Michael Brownstein has been teaching courses on Japanese language and culture at Notre Dame since 1982. His dissertation and subsequent publications centered on the Meiji Period writer Kitamura Tokoku (1868-1894) and especially the impact of Western literary criticism on Japanese writers in the late 19th century. His current research interests concern the Tokugawa Period playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1725). Brownstein is working on a book-length critical study of Chikamatsu's domestic dramas.
