Madison Oswald Interview

What is the Japanese major like at Notre Dame?

“It’s a different way of thinking. Once you have a foothold, you really start developing a sense of mastery,” said Japanese major Joshua Kuiper.

In Japanese, you’ll take classes like:

  • Language Studies
  • The Samurai in Literature
  • Religion and the Visual Arts
  • Japanese Popular Culture
  • Japanese Horror
  • Ancient Japan
  • Translation Studies
  • Modern Japanese Literature

Japanese majors pursue their passions while developing skills such as cross-cultural engagement, communication, translation/interpretation, and textual analysis.

After graduation, students go on to top graduate and professional schools and work in a variety of professions and industries. First jobs include:

  • Japan Exchange and Teaching Program
  • Consulting assistant, Chicago Tokyo Group
  • Economic analyst, China Policy
  • Data editor, NetProspex
  • Business management associate, General Mills

“There are so many opportunities with Japanese. I definitely see myself trying to keep up with the language,” said Japanese major Madison Oswald. “I want Japanese to be a very important part of me in the future.”
