Michel Hockx, director of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies at the University of Notre Dame, was elected vice president of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA) in September at the association’s 2022 annual meeting at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. His appointment began upon election.
After serving a one-year term, Hockx automatically assumes presidency of the MCAA, including responsibility for planning its annual three-day conference that typically attracts more than 200 Asia scholars from around the world. Hockx has committed to host the 2024 conference at Notre Dame.
The MCAA was formed in 1952 to promote Asian Studies at the university, secondary, and primary levels, as well as to encourage scholarly interchange between Asianists in the Midwest and other parts of the country and the world.
A Chinese literature scholar, Hockx joined Notre Dame in 2016 as the founding director of the Liu Institute, one of nine institutes at the Keough School of Global Affairs. He also has an appointment in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts & Letters.
Hockx’s research examines the effects of moral censorship on the production and preservation of modern Chinese cultural products. He previously served as director of the China Institute at SOAS, University of London and as President of the British Association for Chinese Studies. A native of the Netherlands, Hockx studied Chinese language and literature at Leiden University, where he earned his PhD, and at Liaoning and Peking universities in China.
