The EALC Department’s annual event, East Asian Culture Day, was successfully held at Grand Hall, O’Shaughnessy Hall, on Sunday, October 5, 2025. The event featured games and traditional arts with a total of twelve cultural activities spread across different booths, including calligraphy, painting, scented sachet crafting, mahjong, and a ping-pong challenge; as well as origami (paper folding), Kendama (a traditional Japanese cup-and-ball toy), Tanabata (writing wishes on paper and hanging them on bamboo branches); and try-out sessions for traditional Korean musical instruments, Korean hanbok dressing, and more.
Approximately 150 language-learning students participated in the event. Each student was asked to take part in at least six activities—two from each program: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Through these activities, students not only interacted with peers but also learned about different East Asian cultures and made new friends. In addition to the rich variety of cultural activities, the event also offered foods representing various East Asian traditions, giving students a literal “taste” of the region’s cultures. Overall, East Asian Culture Day provided a wonderful opportunity for students to experience and appreciate the diversity of East Asian cultures.
