Lecture/film series examines transnational Asian experiences
A three-part lecture series and film screening by the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and several campus partners at the University of Notre Dame will examine Asian experiences based on transnational migration through the lens of humanities disciplines.
The series Border Crossings in Asian Humanities will host guest lecturers whose work addresses, respectively, challenges to western categories of transgender in the context of global queer Asia; transnational Buddhism and an Irish Buddhish monk in early 20th-century Burma; Cantonese opera singers who perform in Cuba before and during Castro’s revolution; and Japanese-language literature produced by writing communities in Brazil.
All events are free and open to the public.
Liu Institute Director Michel Hockx, himself a Chinese literature scholar and co-organizer of the series, emphasized the relevance of the theme and speakers: “Humanities disciplines are at the core of what our university stands for, yet most humanities teaching and research at Notre Dame remains entrenched in Eurocentric paradigms. The Liu Institute and our series cosponsors seek to change this, and to ensure that the cultural and historical experiences of more than 60 percent of humanity are studied and understood by all members of our community.”
Alexander Hsu, a Buddhism scholar, assistant teaching professor of global affairs and Liu Institute faculty fellow, organized the series along with Hockx.
The Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies provides integrated and multidisciplinary research and teaching on Asia. The Institute also promotes general awareness, understanding, and knowledge of Asia through public events and supporting student and faculty scholarship and engagement with partners in Asia. The Institute, part of the Keough School of Global Affairs, was established in 2010 by a gift from the RM Liu Foundation that supports the philanthropic activities of Robert and Mimi Liu and their children, Emily and Justin, both Notre Dame graduates.
