Message from Brandon Frost, Japanese major, class of ‘09
Brandon spent the spring of ’08 semester in Nagoya, Japan.
Sawatdee karp!
Hello All!
I just wanted to update everyone on my summer thus far! I am currently in Bangkok, Thailand on the Center for Social Concern's ISSLP program. Living in Bangkok (with nearly complete independence) is an exciting adventure, especially without any Thai language skills. The transition from living in Nagoya, Japan and being able to speak Japanese to Bangkok with no Thai language background makes me want to pick up the language even more...(I'm getting there, slowly but surely). My job in Thailand is simply fascinating! I teach two classes of English and two classes of Japanese (yes, JAPANESE!) to Buddhist monks who are from the Shan State (a northeastern region of present day Myanmar). I really enjoy the fact that most of these monks have the same passion for Japanese culture as I do.
In addition, the cultural exchange between the monks and myself are truly rewarding: I am starting to understand the complex situation of present day Southeast Asian politics, history and culture.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer! I know many are hard at work, either researching or teaching, but I look forward to hearing your stories!
As they say in Thailand, lala sawatdee karp! (Goodbye and persevere!)
Sincerely,
Brandon Frost, Class of ‘09
