Seniors and Beginning Chinese:

Our Chinese program is designed to offer majors to those who take our courses. The administration of the University is encouraging language departments to work on retaining students beyond the first or second year of a language so that they can matriculate into higher level courses, which in the case of Chinese would be third, fourth and fifth year. At the same time, we have a finite number of courses, instructors and seats available for this program. So, for these reasons, the program does not prohibit seniors from registering for the beginning Chinese courses, but only asks that they wait until the younger students, who, because of the longer trajectory ahead of them, have the option of becoming full majors or minors in the program and of taking our advanced courses, have had a chance to register first. After they have had a chance to register, the Department will welcome any seniors who want to embark on this course of study provided that seats are still available in the classes.
